for this task we were to choose from a list of poems and create an art piece that represents that poem, from the list i chose "do not go gentle into that good night" by Dylan Thomas, a poem about the poet wanting their father to fight more to continue living rather than giving in to death. i chose this poem because i thought that the imagry and language within this poem were very powerful and convey the conviction behind the poets words and the emotion they wanted to convey. in order to represent these emotions i wanted to 3D model a graveyard, which showed the ultimate fate of the poets father showing the enevitability of death, but also convey the anger and passion behind the poets words. originally i wanted to do more with the 3d model but i was overambition with what i could do and ended up cutting aspects of the model i wanted to convey, for example i wanted to have an arm crawlling out of the grave showing the father fighting, and i wanted the lighting to be more intense and more clear fog, however the particule affects used for the grass and leafs too longer than planned.

i primarily used this image as a reference as i liked the emotion and look of the setting, and felt i could use this to then build on my idea, i also used the location and placements of the graves as a reference since i need proportions.

with the reference i began getting the basic designs and shapes of all the models within the scene, this is where the particles problems began because i could for the life of me get the random rotation and random location of the particles, i designed a part of the grass and then used the particle system to render them along the dirt ground i had modelled.

I ended up spending way too much time on this as i just couldn't get it to look how i wanted, despite my best efforts.

after i had gotten somewhere with the particle system i moved onto sculpting the trees, i was actually really proud of the detail and design of the trees, and the leaves weren't that bad either which is something i struggle with alot, however within the final scene the trees are barely seen especially with the texturing and lighting, so for future reference i need to get a better grip of time management and what aspects of my designs i should put more effort into.

in a magical world where time is a myth i could of created my own textures for the scene, but this is very very time consuming and with how much i had struggled with just the 3D modelling its wasn't an option to make my own textures, so i made sure to use open source textures and helped elevate my scene.

Do not go gentle into that good night

by Dylan Thomas

"Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on that sad height, Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light."
